SCOPE OF PRACTICE
Since bowen therapists are not currently regulated by the government in any provincial jurisdiction in Canada, BTAC has developed the following scope of practice for all members:
The scope of practice of bowen therapy is the external application of a sequence of non-invasive bodywork moves to aid in the reduction of pain and inflammation in the body, realignment of the skeletal system, detoxification and alleviation of physiological dysfunction.
"Bowen therapy" involves the gentle movement of skin, fascia, muscles, nerves, ligaments and tendons of the human body utilizing the practitioner’s hands, fingers, thumbs, and elbows. No machines, needles, oils or lotions are utilized. There is no forceful manipulation of the spine or skeletal structure. Clients are not required to disrobe.
Limited natural remedies and nutritional foods may be recommended to reduce inflammation, relax muscles and promote healing. These are limited to those taught within the the bowen training program unless the therapist has other certifications.
The recommendation of specific exercises to aid in the healing process is also included in the scope of a bowen therapist.
