WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?
Bowen Therapy is a holistic and multidimensional approach to pain relief based on the work of Tom Bowen, who developed the technique in the 1950’s in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. It is now practiced worldwide including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Europe, the USA and many other countries.
Tom Bowen believed that the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health or pain problems could be found in the soft tissue or fascia. Fascia is a specific type of connective tissue that forms a three dimensional web surrounding every tissue in the body. Fascia is the body organizer embracing all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and muscles. Therefore, it is proposed that fascial dysfunction can affect every structure, muscle, nerve and organ in the body.
Bowen Therapy involves short, gentle movements at the level of superficial fascia over the muscles, nerves, ligaments and tendons of the human body utilizing the practitioner's hands, fingers and thumbs. No machines or needles are utilized. There is no forceful manipulation of the spine or skeletal structure and no kneading of muscle tissue. The short, gentle moves of bowen therapy are thought to stimulate specific receptors that signal the autonomous nervous system to correct dysfunction and restore balance on a holistic level.
After reviewing the client's medical history and performing any necessary physical assessments a customized treatment plan is created for the client. Treatments generally last 30 minutes to an hour and can be performed over light, loose clothing. Initial treatments are spaced approximately 5-10 days apart. Once acute pain has subsided, ongoing treatments may not be required.
In contrast to other hands-on modalities, where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through manipulation, bowen therapy facilitates the body in healing itself, with minimal intervention.
